The white paper is the first in a series designed to explore issues Somnia describes as “germane to hospitals struggling to control anesthesia subsidies.” The first paper summarizes the history of anesthesia subsidies and discusses trends in delivery, staffing and reimbursement that have driven anesthesia subsidies.
According to the paper, an MGMA report found that 70 percent of hospitals were faced with subsidy issues in 2006, and the Clinical Advisory Board reported the annual subsidy was near $120,000 per anesthesia provider in 2005. The white paper also discusses the effect of ASCs and clinician shortages on anesthesia subsidies and staffing costs in hospitals.
