Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset (N.J.) opened a rapid decision unit, mycentraljersey.com reported May 11.

The 18-room unit will care for emergency department patients who do not need to be admitted but require further evaluation or monitoring to determine the best plan of care.

“Having this dedicated space for patients under observation will make our Emergency Department more efficient and will help patients get home faster,” Deirdre Blaus, the hospital’s chief administrative officer, told the news outlet.

The unit is expected to open later in May. It was dedicated after the Kalafer family, who have donated more than $3.5 million to the hospital in the last 20 years.
