“What we have to do today is look at all of our costs and try to be as…sustainable cost efficient as we can,” Wayne Hutson, CFO of Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Ind., said in a Johnson Controls video.
After becoming more efficient in many areas, Union Hospital officials turned to the operating room to look for cost savings in energy use. According to the video, when ORs are unoccupied, energy is wasted through unnecessary air flow.
“Anything we can do to save energy, we’re going to be all over it,” said Dave Snapp, director of construction development at Union Hospital, in the video.
Union Hospital implemented Johnson Controls’ Healthcare Environment Optimization. HEO ties a hospital’s building automation system with the OR scheduling. That way, when an OR is unoccupied, the HVAC system can switch to stand-by mode, thus saving energy and money for the hospital. When the OR is in use, the HEO kicks back in gear so the room is safe for patients.
Annual savings can be has high as $10,000 per OR, according to Johnson Controls.
