“Every one of you here today took an oath when you entered the medical profession,” Pres. Obama told the physicians on Oct. 5. “It was not an oath that you would spend a lot of time on the phone with insurance companies. You took an oath so you could heal people.”
The President outlined reform proposals such as capping patient costs, creating an open marketplace for health insurance and requiring that insurers cover preventive care.
He did not mention the controversial “public option” insurance plan, opposed by some moderate Democrats whose support is needed for passage, but White House officials are testing its political viability behind the scenes on Capitol Hill.
