The nursing staff at a Providence hospital in Oregon helped design a new unit space that the organization said will improve care coordination and increase capacity.
Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center in Oregon City, Ore., involved its nursing staff in the layout of a new short stay unit that opened in late January.
“Their input helped shape the unit’s layout, room design and workflow to support efficiency, safety and smoother patient transitions — from recovery through discharge,” Providence told Becker’s. “The goal was to create a purpose‑built space that reflects how care is actually delivered, not just how it looks on paper.”
The staff’s suggestions included headwall design and placement of blood pressure cuffs and hand sanitizer, according to a March 18 report from Fox network affiliate KPTV.
“Because we designed every aspect of this room and the whole unit, we are efficient in getting patients in and out more smoothly,” charge nurse Joni Hanson told KPTV.
The hospital’s previous short-stay unit space will now be used for inpatient services and house an additional 16 medical-surgical beds. Providence said it expects the facility can now perform about 1,000 additional surgeries per year.
Renton, Wash.-based Providence, a 51-hospital system, operates Willamette Falls Medical Center.
