Chicago-based Northwestern Medicine, which ranks No. 8 nationally for transplant volume, established a transplant institute Oct. 27.
Over 62 years, Northwestern Medicine clinicians have performed more than 12,100 solid organ transplants, according to the system. The system has the largest liver, kidney and living donor transplant programs in Illinois. In September, the system’s liver transplant team completed its 3,000th liver transplant, becoming the first program in Illinois to reach that milestone.
The institute will house several centers: organ transplant centers for abdominal organs, including kidney, liver, pancreas, islet cell, intestinal and pediatric transplantation; a center for transplant innovation; a center for transplant research and education; and a center for transplant access.
Northwestern Medicine said it is advancing innovation in transplant medicine through AI-powered donor matching, awake kidney transplants, xenotransplantation and liver transplants for stage 4 colorectal cancer.
