Triangulating Operating Platform Reduces Surgical Workload During Single-Site Laparoscopy

Researchers suggest that a novel, single-port, triangulating surgical platform could improve surgeons’ bimanual coordination in the OR and decrease mental workload during single-incision laparoscopies, according to an article published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.

Fourteen healthcare professionals were observed as they performed a validated intracorporeal suturing task either by a single-site laparoscopy method or SPSP that provided true-right and true-left manipulation. Standard laparoscopy served as control. The resulting sutures were assessed with validated scoring methods and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index was utilized to rate the subject’s mental workload.

Results suggest that although single-site laparoscopy impairs basic laparoscopic skills, surgical platforms that provide true-left and true-right manipulation of instruments could address some of the challenges posed in single-site laparoscopy.
