Here are six things to know about the bills.

1. The bills would increase the minimum age to buy cigarettes from 18 to 21.

2. Under the bills, it would be illegal to use chewing tobacco at sport facilities, including Nationals Park, according to the article.

3. Local residents would also see restrictions against electronic cigarette smoking in restaurants, schools and public buildings.

4. D.C. Council member Kenyan R. McDuffie (D-Ward 5) has been a longtime supporter of raising the minimum age to possess and purchase tobacco, claiming it would reduce youth exposure to a “deadly habit,” according to the article.

5. Other D.C. Council members, who objected to passing the bill, have criticized the anti-tobacco laws for redefining adulthood and said it was unnecessarily punitive, reports The Washington Times.

6. The anti-tobacco bills passed Tuesday must be approved by the D.C. Council again before advancing to Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) for consideration.
