The health system has proposed to turn the old facility into an expansion of its University Hospital by adding an eight-room operating suite, 95 general patient care beds and 25 intensive care beds to serve mainly neuroscience patients. The facility would also house offices for staff of the new $754 million Mott hospital, which opened in December.
Adding beds to the old hospital will help University Hospital manage growing patient volume, as health system officials predict an increase in occupancy from 85.2 percent to 86.7 percent from fiscal year 2011 to FY 2012, according to the report.
