M Health Fairview has opened a dedicated donor care unit to optimize outcomes for transplant patients and ease capacity strain across the region.

The unit operates in partnership with LifeSource, an organization that coordinates the transfer of organ donors, evaluates organs for transplant and oversees the matching process. Transplant teams at Minneapolis-based M Health Fairview manage patient care.

The freestanding facility, located on the campus of M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center, is the first of its kind in the state, according to an April 10 news release.

Leaders expect the initiative to enable quicker organ recovery, improve transplant outcomes and reduce capacity pressure on other hospitals in the region by allowing the transfer of deceased donors to the unit.
