Plans call for a new six-story hospital building that will connect to the existing facility and include a maternity center, rooftop heliport and expanded emergency department. Last year, the hospital had more than 55,000 ED visits in a space designed to manage only 25,000.

The Fremont-Rideout Cancer Center is currently undergoing construction that will nearly double its size. The expansion is expected to open in September.
