Charity Hospital was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, and efforts to replace the hospital have been in the works for some time, with Gov. Bobby Jindal committing to building a $1.2 billion teaching hospital to replace the Charity facility.
However, preservation groups have objected to the replacement facility. The Foundation for Historical Louisiana commissioned a study of the plan, which found that rebuilding Charity would cost $283 million less than new construction, according to the report.
Plans for the hospital will next be heard by the full Commission, which has the authority only to recommend cuts to programs.
