Endeavor Health Elmhurst (Ill.) Hospital opened a 16-bed patient observation unit July 16 to ease emergency department crowding.

The patient observation unit is an extension of the existing surgical observation unit, and is a dedicated space for patients who may require a little more monitoring, according to a hospital news release. The unit will help patients transition more smoothly from the ED while providing support to the hospital’s ED, which is one of the busiest in the system.

It is the first major campus expansion project designed to improve access at Elmhurst Hospital, according to the release.
