Sixteen hospitals will work with physicians from the medical school and seven fire rescue departments in Miami-Dade County to coordinate diagnosis, transport and treatment of stroke patients.

This partnership, called the Fire Officers Association of Miami-Dade EMS Stroke Network, aims to improve stroke patients’ outcomes.

Under the network, hospitals are designated as either a primary or comprehensive stroke center. Primary stroke centers will provide care to stroke patients who are within the 3.5-hour time period in which the clot-busting drug called tissue plasminogen activator can be used. Comprehensive stroke centers will be staffed by an interventional neuroradiologist and will treat patients beyond the 3.5-hour window and those who need more serious treatment.

The release did not include the names of the participating hospitals.
