The 24-bed hospital, which has significant outpatient functions and a staff of 1,550 employees, attributes its success to several strategies:
- Added physicians outside of pulmonology to medical staff. It brought on board four cardiologists, a gastroenterologist and an interventional pulmonologist to treat patients for pulmonary complications that spread to other parts of the body.
- Bolstered its research efforts. The hospital obtained $56.8 million in grants in 2009, compared to $48.6 million in 2007. The whole increase is attributable to extra NIH funding from the federal stimulus bill.
- Expanded functions. This included the hospital’s Minimally Invasive Diagnostic Center and Institute for Advanced Biomedical Imaging.
- New clinical sites. It added new sites in south metro Denver and Highlands Ranch.
- Capital improvements. It invested $27.8 million in projects such as new technology for CT-Scans, PET Scans and MRIs.
