Lebanon, N.H.-based Dartmouth and the University of Vermont Health Network — which will soon undergo a CEO change — are partnering to coordinate kidney transplant surgeries.

In late 2024, amid a broad service reduction, Burlington-based University of Vermont Medical Center ended its kidney transplant program and redirected patients needing surgeries to Dartmouth. The medical center previously logged about a dozen kidney transplants each year, according to a Sept. 17 news release from Dartmouth.

Under the partnership, patients will receive pre-transplant evaluations and preparation at UVMMC, with clinical support from both systems. After the transplant operation at Dartmouth, patients who are surgically stable will be transferred to UVMMC for long-term, post-transplant care.

Dartmouth Health, the sole academic health system in New Hampshire, has been increasing its footprint. In July 2024, the system added Claremont, N.H.-based Valley Regional Hospital, a 25-bed facility, to its network. On Sept. 12, another 25-bed hospital — Littleton (N.H.) Regional Healthcare — signed a letter of intent to become a member of Dartmouth Health.
