CMS: 1 in 6 Medicare Beneficiaries Used Preventive Services Since Jan. 2011

As of June 10, 2011, approximately 5.5 million individuals with Medicare — or 1 in 6 beneficiaries — used one or more of the preventive services provided under the Affordable Care Act, according to a recently released CMS report.

Starting this year, the Affordable Care Act eliminated Part B coinsurance and deductibles for recommended preventive services, including many cancer screenings and key immunizations. The law also added a no-cost annual wellness visit with a physician of beneficiaries’ choice.

According to the report, more than 1.5 million Medicare beneficiaries underwent bone mass measurements; 2.3 million beneficiaries underwent mammography screenings; and 1.1 million beneficiaries underwent prostate-specific antigen testing. In order to increase awareness about the preventive services, CMS will be launching a public outreach campaign in communities across the country.
