Cleveland-based Cleveland Clinic is expanding its Saturday surgery program, adding weekend operating room availability for elective eye and orthopedic procedures at additional locations across Northeast Ohio.
Six things to know:
1. Beginning this month, Cleveland Clinic’s Cole Eye Institute on its main campus will begin offering Saturday procedures. Medina Hospital, Marymount Hospital and Marymount Ambulatory Surgery Center also will begin offering weekend elective outpatient orthopedic surgeries and procedures.
2. The expansion builds on the health system’s broader effort to improve patient access. In June 2025, Cleveland Clinic expanded evening and weekend specialty appointments across Northeast Ohio and introduced Saturday surgeries at several regional hospitals.
3. Earlier this year, Cleveland Clinic also expanded Saturday surgeries at its main campus to include outpatient urology, plastic surgery, head and neck, orthopedic and spine procedures.
4. Since launching Saturday surgery hours, Cleveland Clinic has performed nearly 1,600 weekend procedures, with endoscopies and chronic pain treatments accounting for the highest volumes.
5. Cleveland Clinic also said it added more than 33,000 outpatient specialty appointment slots between July 2025 and May 2026 through expanded evening and weekend hours at dozens of Northeast Ohio locations. In addition to those appointments, Cleveland Clinic offers in-person and virtual visits, as well as urgent, express and emergency care seven days a week.
6. Health systems are increasingly focused on improving timely access to care as they work to reduce delays caused by cost, coverage loss and scheduling barriers. In November, Patrick Kokoruda, vice president of access transformation at Cleveland Clinic, told Becker’s the system was proactively reaching out to patients overdue for screenings, expanding evening and weekend hours, enhancing self-scheduling capabilities and using real-time notifications to fill appointment openings as they become available.
“We are excited to be able to add more specialties and locations to our expanded hours initiative,” Scott Steele, MD, president of Cleveland Clinic’s Main Campus Submarket, said in a July 7 news release. “We are committed to meeting patients where they are and providing them with options for care at times that work with their schedules. We will continue to look for ways to make getting the right care easier for our patients.”
