The proposed $73-million renovation project would add medical/surgical and intensive care beds to the  9th, 10th and 13th floors of the Galter Pavilion.

Northwestern says it needs to add these beds to ease overcrowding and avoid backups in its emergency department. According to the report, Northwestern’s capacity would pass 90 percent within the next two years, also prohibiting the hospital from taking transfers on busy days.

The plans also include the construction of 9th floor connector to enable staff to wheel patients from Galter to the Feinberg Tower.
