In partnership with the CDC Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, CDC researchers created the 500 Cities Project, to help public health professionals and researchers identify where specific health outcomes such as cancer, diabetes and coronary heart disease, among others, are most prevalent in adults ages 18 years and older by geographical region.
Here are the top 10 cities with the highest percentage of adults diagnosed with mental health conditions. The results have been adjusted for age.
- New Bedford, Mass. — 18.4 percent of adults
- Fall River, Mass. — 18.3
- Reading, Pa. — 18.2
- Youngstown, Ohio — 17.7
- Flint, Mich. — 17.4
- Springfield, Mass. — 17.3
- Gary, Ind. — 17.3
- Camden, N.J. — 17.2
- Cleveland — 17.2
- Detroit — 17.2
