5 Tips for Effective OR Time Management

Operating room time management can have a significant effect on OR costs and revenue. Charles Militana, MD, director of anesthesia at Dorothy & Alvin Schwartz Ambulatory Surgery Center and director of ambulatory surgery centers with North American Partners in Anesthesia, shared five tips for effective OR time management during a presentation (pdf).

1.   An efficient pre-surgical testing process will determine the appropriateness and optimization of patients to minimize same-day cancellations.
2.   The anesthesia and nursing departments together must enforce first-case start times.
3.   Appropriate ambulatory anesthetic techniques must be used.
4.   Efficient OR turnover times must be a goal.
5.   Post-anesthesia care unit flow can be improved with the appropriate anesthetic protocols.
