Effective Jan. 1, 2014, the unit, which includes obstetrics, labor, delivery and nursery, will shut down. Rex Conger, CEO of Perry Memorial, told the News Tribune his 25-bed hospital’s women’s department has lost $500,000 last year alone. In addition, the number of deliveries has fallen 38 percent in the past 10 years at the hospital, with most delivery patients under Medicaid.
After Perry Memorial’s unit closes, St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley, Ill., will be the only hospital in the county to handle deliveries, according to the report.
