5 states with the highest, lowest cancer mortality rate

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S., killing more than 575 million people a year and costing more than $48 billion in direct medical costs annually, according to the “America’s Health Rankings” report from United Health Foundation.

Measuring cancer mortality helps researchers indicate the toll this diseases places on the population. The national cancer mortality average is 189.9 deaths per 100,000 person, according to the most recent report in 2014, a decrease of 10 deaths per 100,000 person from the 2004 edition of the report.

Still, the cancer mortality rate varies from state to state. The states with the most cancer deaths per 100,000 people are:

1. Kentucky — 228.3

2. Mississippi — 223.7

3. West Virginia — 220.5

4. Louisiana — 217.4

5. Arkansas — 214.9

The states with the least cancer deaths per 100,000 people are:

1. Utah — 145.7

2. Hawaii — 155.3

3. Colorado — 163

4. New Mexico — 167.1

5. Arizona — 170.2
