17 fatal hospital shootings since 2002

The shooting at Chicago-based Mercy Hospital & Medical Center on Nov. 19 marked one of the worst shooting incidents at a hospital or healthcare facility in more than two decades, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Citing data compiled by the Associated Press, the publication compiled a list of deadly hospital and health system shootings in recent years.

Here are 17 recent hospital shootings, beginning with the most recent:

1. Nov. 19, 2018: Four individuals died in a shooting at Mercy Hospital & Medical Center, including an emergency room physician, a first-year pharmacy resident, a police officer and the alleged gunman. The incident reportedly began as a domestic situation between the suspect and Tamara O'Neal, MD, who was shot to death outside of the hospital on her way to work.

2. Aug. 8, 2018: A man claiming he sought to end his ailing wife's suffering fatally shot her in her bed at Valhalla, N.Y.-based Westchester Medical Center. The man died the same day of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

3. Dec. 20, 2017: A gunman opened fire at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center's psychiatric services emergency room, injuring an unarmed security officer before fatally shooting himself.

4. Sept. 12, 2017: A 70-year-old female patient at Lebanon, N.H.-based Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center's intensive care unit was fatally shot by her son. The shooting suspect was indicted on charges of first- and second-degree murder for the incident in December 2017.

5. June 30, 2017: A former physician at New York City-based Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center opened fire inside the hospital, killing Tracy Sin-Yee Tam, DO, and wounding six others before fatally shooting himself in the head.

6. July 17, 2016: A man entered Titusville, Fla.-based Parrish Medical Center and fatally shot a 92-year-old patient and a hospital-affiliated attendant in a seemingly random incident.

7. Jan. 20, 2015: Michael J. Davidson, MD, a surgeon and director of endovascular cardiac surgery at Boston-based Brigham and Women's Hospital, was shot and killed outside an exam room by a man who later fatally shot himself.

8. Dec. 17, 2013: A gunman who blamed his physician for a botched vasectomy fatally shot a second physician and critically injured two other individuals at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev. The alleged gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

9. Oct. 16, 2012: A 59-year-old man was fatally shot by a family member while visiting a second family member at Augusta, Ga.-based University Hospital.

10. Aug. 4, 2012: A man fatally shot his wife in a hospital bed at Akron (Ohio) General Medical Center. The shooting suspect told police at the time he had acted out of love and intended to kill himself during the incident, but the weapon jammed.

11. March 8, 2012: A gunman with schizophrenia fatally shot a nurse and injured five other employees at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic campus.

12. Nov. 24, 2011: A housekeeping employee fatally shot a fellow employee inside a parking garage at a University of Illinois at Chicago-affiliated hospital. Police called the incident an "apparent domestic-related shooting," according to the report.

13. April 19, 2010: A man who thought his surgeon had implanted a computer chip in him to track his movements during an appendectomy years earlier opened fire outside the Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville, Tenn., killing one hospital worker and wounding two others before killing himself.

14. June 13, 2009: A woman fatally shot her estranged husband in his hospital bed at Charleston (W.Va.) Area Medical Center Memorial Hospital's intensive care unit.

15. Nov. 27, 2008: A worker returned to Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna, Alaska, one day after being fired and fatally shot one of his ex-supervisors and critically injured another before being killed by police.

16. Sept. 29, 2005: A man arrested for drunken driving grabbed a police officer's gun, wounding the officer and an emergency room technician before fatally shooting another officer at Langhorne, Pa.-based St. Mary Medical Center.

17. May 16, 2002: One nurse was shot to death and another was critically wounded in a shooting outside the McKinney, Texas-based North Central Medical Center. The husband of one of the nurses later pleaded guilty to committing the incident.
