Researchers used the Myocardial Infarction Data Acquisition System database to access data on patients discharged with a primary diagnosis of cerebral infarction from nonfederal acute-care hospitals in New Jersey from 1996-2007. They matched these records with New Jersey death registration files to assess out-of-hospital deaths.
Ninety-day mortality and the risk of 90-day mortality were greater in stroke patients who were admitted on the weekends compared to weekdays. However, this difference between weekend and weekday admissions was not seen with patients admitted to comprehensive stroke centers.
