Morgantown, W.Va.-based WVU Medicine is planning more than $460 million in capital projects this year to expand healthcare access in the state, the health system said April 16.

The projects, which are pending regulatory approval, include the construction of a new inpatient tower, cancer center and outpatient surgery center, among other expansion efforts. The initiative builds on a $400 million investment in expansion projects that the 25-hospital system announced last year, bringing its two-year investment close to $1 billion.

Six new capital projects to know:

1. WVU Medicine will build a $200.9 million patient tower at Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg, increasing bed capacity from 190 to 316. The project is slated for completion in the first quarter of 2028.

2. The system is planning a $60 million expansion and renovation at Jefferson Medical Center in Ranson that includes construction of a three-story ambulatory building slated to open in late 2027.

3. WVU Medicine will build a $122.6 million outpatient cancer center in Wheeling, W.Va., slated to open in October 2028.

4. The system will construct a $16.6 million outpatient pediatrics facility on its Wheeling (W.Va.) Hospital campus. The facility is expected to be completed in November 2026.

5. WVU Medicine will add a $48 million outpatient surgery center next to United Hospital Center in Bridgeport by December 2026.

6. The system will also spend $16 million to transform a former extended care facility at Summersville (W.Va.) Regional Medical Center into an outpatient facility by September 2026. The facility will house oncology and infusion services, rehabilitation therapies and nuclear medicine, among other services.
