Marietta, Ga.-based Wellstar Health System plans to file a letter of intent with the state department of health on or before June 23 for a 230-bed hospital in Acworth, Ga.

The new hospital would be built across from Wellstar Acworth Health Park, an outpatient facility that includes an ambulatory surgery center. The hospital would be supported by Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center and Wellstar Paulding Medical Center, as well as various primary, urgent and specialty care facilities that will enable the project to provide high-quality care in an integrated and coordinated manner.

“The area is growing so much that even when our new tower at Wellstar Kennestone opens next year, the region will need more hospital beds,” Wellstar President and CEO Candice Saunders said in a May 29 news release. “A new hospital in Acworth would fill a crucial need for the region’s medical care.”

Acworth’s population has grown fivefold in ten years and continues to “attract people who want to live and work in our area,” said Tommy Allegood, mayor for the City of Acworth. “A hospital would be extremely beneficial to our community, and we appreciate Wellstar’s willingness to meet our need.”

Wellstar is also spending more than $1.4 billion to expand capacity and care access across various facilities. Key projects include:

  • A 200-plus bed tower at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital.
  • A 56-bed tower at Wellstar Paulding Hospital.
  • An oncology center at Wellstar Spalding Hospital.
  • A 100-bed hospital and medical office building in Columbia County.
  • New primary, pediatric, urgent and specialty care facilities across various communities.
