Children’s Hospital of Richmond — part of Richmond, Va.-based VCU Health — will welcome the first patients to its new $28 million neonatal intensive care unit on Jan. 31.
The 28,000-square-foot unit is housed within the hospital’s children’s tower, which opened in 2023 with shell space for additional expansions.
The new NICU contains 16 single rooms and two twin rooms, bringing the hospital’s total number of NICU beds to 60.
Children’s Hospital of Richmond operates a level 4 NICU and serves as a major referral center for premature and full-term infants in the region requiring specialized care. The expansion comes as the hospital faces increased demand for NICU services while many hospitals nationwide end inpatient pediatric care due to financial constraints and low patient volumes.
“With our 40-bed NICU continually at capacity, the need for this expansion to serve babies requiring critical, innovative medical care was evident — and we were honored to respond accordingly,” Marlon Levy, MD, senior vice president for VCU Health Sciences and CEO of VCU Health, said in a Jan. 14 news release.
