Vanderbilt denied CON for planned 48-bed hospital

Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt Health has been denied permission to build a new hospital in suburban Murfreesboro, according to a June 15 WGNS Radio report.

The seven-hospital system was denied a certificate of need to build the 48-bed facility after other medical providers voiced opposition to the plan. Those included St. Louis-based Ascension, which was planning expansion at its Saint Thomas Rutherford location at the same time, according to the report.

"We are very disappointed in the decision, and we are currently reviewing all available options," Vanderbilt spokesperson John Howser told the radio station. "VUMC continues to be committed to the Vanderbilt Rutherford Hospital project and to serving the patients of Rutherford County."

Murfreesboro is the sixth-largest city in Tennessee and about 30 miles from Nashville.
