Madison, Wis.-based UW Health will open the $140 million expansion at its East Madison Hospital on Nov. 2.
The 120,000-square-foot expansion at East Madison increases surgical and inpatient capacity and improves care access for patients in Dane County and across Wisconsin, according to a news release shared with Becker’s.
The expansion grows the hospital’s footprint to roughly 620,000 square feet. It increases the number of operating rooms from 14 to 20, increases the surgical prep and recovery bay capacity from 23 to 60 and grows inpatient bed capacity from 84 to 98.
UW Health hired approximately 250 new employees to staff the new space, in addition to current staff.
East Madison Hospital’s surgical volumes have grown from approximately 6,000 procedures when it opened in 2015 to about 14,000 in 2025. Annual inpatient admissions also doubled from roughly 2,200 to 4,400, Ryann DeGraff, vice president and regional COO of East Madison Hospital, said in the release.
The expansion will help East Madison perform approximately 30% more surgeries and accommodate around 6% more inpatient admissions. Specialized surgical services will also be available at the hospital, including gynecology, gynecologic oncology, ophthalmology and urology.
New patient rooms also feature video technology to support remote nursing observation, care team video communication and secure virtual visits with family and friends.
