University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medicine received a $10 million gift from local philanthropists Mark and Maureen Davitt, with $9 million earmarked for a new pediatric emergency department at Strong Memorial Hospital.

The Davitt Family Pediatric Emergency Department will be part of Strong’s expansion project, which will grow the hospital to more than 950 beds and 200 emergency department exam and treatment areas, according to an Oct. 13 news release. Strong’s emergency department was designed for 66,000 visits a year and now handles more than 110,000.

The remaining $1 million will support the Davitt Family Integrated Care Center at Rochester-based Golisano Children’s Hospital, a dedicated outpatient space for children with serious and complex medical conditions. Construction on the center will begin once the university raises $2.5 million in total. Golisano Children’s is the Finger Lakes region’s only pediatric hospital and serves more than 85,000 children each year.

Mr. Davitt is president of Davitt Holdings and founder of Fairport, N.Y.-based ConServe. Ms. Davitt is a retired registered nurse with a background in medical, surgical and pediatric nursing. The couple has previously given to the health system, including a $2 million gift to Golisano Children’s in 2018 and a $2.5 million gift in 2022 to endow a professorship and support programs in child and adolescent psychiatry.

Kathy Parrinello, PhD, CEO of Strong Memorial, said the first phase of the expansion is less than a year from opening.

The project will add more than 650,000 square feet of clinical space, including a nine-story inpatient tower, at a hospital that houses the region’s only level 1 trauma center and serves as a safety-net hospital for more than 2 million people across more than 15 counties.
