Non-farm payrolls rose by only 164,000 jobs in March, compared to a high of 324,000 in February. Professional and business services added 54,000 jobs — the most of any industry — while manufacturing and healthcare each added 24,000.
The year began with a 4.1 percent unemployment rate in January.
