Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health has begun construction on a 48-acre campus in Cary, N.C., that will include a 152-bed hospital expected to open in early 2032.

The new hospital will become the health system’s 21st and is part of an expansion aimed at meeting rising demand for healthcare in the region, which is projected to add 44,000 residents by 2035, the health system said in an Oct. 6 news release.

The campus will initially include a six-story, 192,000-square-foot medical office building and a 900-space parking deck, both expected to open in summer 2028. Services will include cancer care, cardiology, rheumatology, urology, obstetrics and gynecology, dermatology and orthopedics, along with imaging, laboratory and pharmacy services.

The outpatient facility will also offer radiation oncology, infusion services, clinical trials and comprehensive cancer support services.

UNC Health aims to begin construction on the hospital in 2028. The project has received state certificate-of-need approval, and the campus is expected to eventually employ about 1,000 people.

“The goal of UNC Health is to connect patients with the right care and expertise while keeping care close to home whenever possible,” UNC Health CEO Cristy Page, MD, said. “Across the Triangle, we are working to better integrate care so that patients have a seamless experience. This new facility is central to that strategy.”

UNC Health currently operates 20 hospitals and more than 900 clinics across North Carolina, according to its website.
