Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló tweeted he and Tesla CEO Elon Musk discussed working together on the project to bring electricity back to the island earlier this month.
Less than three weeks later, Tesla outfitted the children’s hospital with an electricity system powered by solar energy. In the aftermath of the storm, Tesla began sending hundreds of its Powerwall battery systems to the island. The batteries are designed to store energy generated from accompanying solar panels, according to Fortune.
Roughly 24 percent of the island had power as of Oct. 24, according to Fortune.
Mr. Rosselló announced the completion of the children’s hospital project during a press conference Tuesday, which was broadcast live on Facebook. Officials said the children’s hospital is the first of many projects across the island.
In addition to Tesla’s relief efforts, Mr. Musk also personally donated $250,000 in aid to the territory and postponed the launch of one of Tesla’s electric vehicles in November to increase battery production for Puerto Rico and other affected areas, Mr. Musk tweeted Oct. 6.
