Senate Committee Approves $1.5B Increase in HHS Spending for FY2013

A subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee approved funding on Wednesday that increases discretionary spending for HHS programs by $1.5 billion in fiscal year 2013, supporting funding for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Chairman of the Subcommittee Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) argued the bill is “fiscally responsible” because it is in line with the $1.2 trillion budget cuts from last August, according to a Hill report.

All Republican senators on the subcommittee voted against the bill, mainly because it funds the PPACA.

“The majority of Americans do not want the ACA because they know it will lead to higher taxes and lower quality of care,” Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala) said in the report.
