Presence Health awarded $20k grant to improve nutrition of hospital food

The Illinois Health and Hospital Association awarded a $20,000 grant to Urbana, Ill.-based Presence Covenant Medical Center and Danville, Ill.-based Presence United Samaritans Medical Center to expand the healthy food options in their cafeteria and vending machines, according to The News-Gazette.

The hospitals are targeting sodium in particular, and using the funds to offer lower sodium options in the cafeteria as well as develop lower sodium versions of some existing menu items, according to the report. The hospitals also plan to make changes to vending-machine food, adding in more nutritious options and providing information for visitors about what the healthiest options are in each machine, according to the report.

Additionally, the Presence hospitals plan to host community education events on how to make healthy food choices, according to the report.
