The previous hospital, Missouri Rehabilitation Center in Mount Vernon, closed in October 2014 because of decreased patient demand. Missouri residents with TB are currently sent to an out-of-state hospital, which officials said cost the patients $1,291 each day.
Missouri averaged 90 annual active TB cases for the past three years. As the number of people contracting the disease increase each year, TB experts say the U.S. should instate a better plan to manage the disease, according to the report.
The department’s proposed study would be due in June 2017 and cost up to $350,000.
