The Carls Foundation in Detroit gave Beaumont a $2 million grant, which was matched by a donation from the Oakwood Foundation in Dearborn, which focuses on funding access to healthcare.
Funding will go toward building renovations like new finishes, lighting, walls, flooring, ceilings and furniture for clinical and family areas. Upgraded equipment will be purchased, and a “going-home” room will be built, as well as a lactation room.
About 500 premature babies are treated at the Dearborn NICU every year, making it one of the busiest NICUs in Michigan, according to the hospital.
Renovations are slated to begin later this year.
