Saginaw-based Central Michigan University’s College of Medicine has received two $40 million donations, one from Midland-based MyMichigan Health and another from Saginaw-based Covenant HealthCare, totaling $80 million.
The donations are the largest in the university’s history and will support a new medical education building in Saginaw as part of CMU’s initiative, “Advancing Health Together,” according to a Nov. 21 news release.
The college of medicine will now be called the Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine at Central Michigan University and will be relocated to the CMU MyMichigan Health Medical Education Building on MyMichigan’s campus.
“Bringing the majority of our medical students together into a single geographic area will provide greater opportunities for peer-to-peer mentoring and student engagement,” Tina Thompson, PhD, interim dean of the CMU College of Medicine, said in the release. “It will allow for more interaction between and among students and faculty and open doors for further collaboration in research and clinical education across the region.”
CMU plans to break ground on the facility in 2026 as it moves toward a $100 million fundraising goal. The move will also bring expansion opportunities on CMU’s Mount Pleasant campus for other health professional programs.
