McLaren Health to close 2 hospitals, consolidate services at new $450M facility

McLaren Greater Lansing (Mich.) will shutter two hospitals in South Lansing when its new consolidated $450 million campus near Michigan State University opens, according to the Lansing State Journal.

The new facility, expected to open in late 2021, will consolidate services from McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital and McLaren Orthopedic Hospital in one facility. The new hospital will deepen McLaren's academic partnership with Michigan State and house 240 beds, a cancer center and an ambulatory care center.

The two facilities that will close will continue to operate normally for about three more years.

As a result of the consolidation, McLaren will lower its bed count by 149 when the new facility opens, mirroring a national trend among healthcare organizations as more care moves to outpatient settings, Casey Kandow, COO of McLaren Greater Lansing, told the Lansing State Journal.

McLaren is seeking  a buyer to repurpose the closing hospitals. Tearing down the hospitals is an option, but would be the "worst-case scenario," Mr. Kandow told the Lansing State Journal.

"Bringing together our current hospitals into a single healthcare campus will better serve our patients with access to a cancer center, medical services building, and other facilities to support health care delivery, educational opportunities, and medical research," McLaren said in an email to Becker's. "McLaren Greater Lansing has worked with the city of Lansing, the Lansing Economic Area Partnership, and the Lansing Chamber of Commerce to repurpose our existing facilities to best serve our community. McLaren Greater Lansing is exploring several exciting opportunities for the future of our current campuses and will continue to work with community partners as the process continues."
