“The Campaign for the Third Century of MGH Medicine” began in 2005 and coincides with Mass General’s bicentennial in 2011. If the $1.5 billion goal is reached, the hospital will set a New England record and surpass the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s fundraising campaign, which just wrapped up in September after raising a record $1.18 billion, according to the report.
Peter and Paula Lunder of Waterville, Maine, pitched in $35 million and the new tower will be named in their honor. Affluent philanthropists, such as Bill and Melinda Gates, donated 135 separate gifts of $1 million or more, according to the report. Many donors put forth the money for specific research or care purposes, such as AIDS research or PTSD treatment for Middle East war veterans, according to the report.
The 10-story Lunder Building will increase the number of hospital beds by nearly 20 percent, add 19 operating rooms and include a state-of-the-art, spacious emergency room, according to the report.
