The Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care is currently treating twice as many patients per year as it was meant to accommodate. The project would add 28,000 square feet and renovate 17,000 existing square feet.

The expansion will be funded through $6 million in MaineHealth’s operating revenue and $30 million in fundraising. The health system has already raised $28 million.

Officials expect to break ground in October.
