The three story, 90-bed facility will be located in Hellertown, Pa. The facility’s first floor will house the micro-hospital, featuring an 11-bed emergency department and 10 inpatient beds, along with imaging and lab services. The upper floors will house medical offices.
Lehigh Valley currently operates two neighborhood hospitals in Macungie and Gilbertsville, Pa. A third micro-hospital is slated to open in Tannersville, Pa., later this year.
The facilities are designed to improve access to care while reducing emergency department volumes at the system’s larger hospitals.
“The neighborhood hospital model is serving our communities well,” David Burmeister, DO, associate chief physician executive for Philadelphia-based Jefferson Health, said in a March 4 news release. “It’s making critical and often-used medical services more convenient and accessible.”
