Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Health has launched a historic fundraising campaign to build Nevada’s first freestanding children’s hospital, a $1 billion vision aimed at transforming pediatric care in the state.

Three things to know:

1. Intermountain has named Bill Hornbuckle, president and CEO of MGM Resorts International, and his wife, Wendy Hornbuckle, as co-chairs of the Nevada Campaign for Kids. The campaign aims to address critical gaps in pediatric care, including Nevada’s ranking of 48th in the nation for pediatricians per capita. Nearly 30,000 children travel out of state annually to access specialized pediatric care, according to the health system.

2. Plans for the $1 billion hospital include 150 beds, an emergency department, outpatient clinics, and medical offices. The facility will be built at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ Harry Reid Research and Technology Park, with groundbreaking expected in early 2026 and an opening slated for 2030.

3. The campaign aims to not only build the hospital but also to attract top pediatric specialists, expand community programs and strengthen local partnerships.

“Intermountain Health is no stranger to ambition on a grand scale. While no campaign goal has been set yet, this once-in-a-generation endeavor to bring a model health system to the children of Nevada is anticipated to eclipse $1 billion,” David Flood, president of Intermountain Foundation and chief development officer of Intermountain Health, said in an Oct. 27 news release.
