Inova takes leap forward with new Alexandria hospital project

Falls Church, Va.-based Inova Health System has taken a big step forward concerning a project to move its Inova Alexandria (Va.) Hospital to a new modern location in the city, according to a March 8 ALXnow report.

Inova plans to move the hospital from its current location, where it has been since 1962, to the city's Landmark Mall and will eventually occupy about one-fifth of that 52-acre site, the report said. The concept was unanimously approved at an Alexandria city planning meeting March 7.

"We should be celebrating a little bit bigger," Inova's attorney Cathy Puskar said in the report. "Because this is a huge milestone for the city to get this project approved and moving forward and constructed, hopefully by 2028."

The project calls for a 565,000-square-foot hospital center, an 111,000-square-foot cancer center and an 83,000-square-foot specialty care center.

"This hospital is such a needed addition not only for the city of Alexandria, but for the region," said city Commissioner Melinda Lyle. "I think we should all be celebrating."

Inova operates seven hospitals in its home state, with a bed capacity totaling 1,952, and employs approximately 20,000 people.
