Detroit-based Henry Ford Health said May 14 that crews topped out a 20-story patient tower at Henry Ford Hospital as part of the health system’s $2.2 billion expansion project.
“This milestone brings us one step closer to opening the hospital of the future,” Bob Riney, president and CEO of Henry Ford Health, said in a news release.
Five things to know:
1. Crews placed a 32-foot, 1,400-pound steel beam atop the 20-story tower May 14, marking the project’s topping-out milestone.
2. The tower is part of Henry Ford Health’s $2.2 billion Destination: Grand expansion project in Detroit’s New Center neighborhood.
3. The $2.2 billion project includes a 1.2 million-square-foot hospital expansion with 432 private patient rooms, 28 operating suites and a 75,000-square-foot emergency department with 100 treatment spaces and a dedicated behavioral health area.
4. Chicago-based Shirley Ryan AbilityLab will occupy the top three floors of the tower with a 72-bed rehabilitation facility funded by nearly $130 million from the Gilbert Family Foundation.
5. Henry Ford Health said the project remains on track for completion in 2029. The health system has raised $241 million for the expansion project as part of a broader fundraising campaign that has generated $653 million to date.
