East Ohio Regional Hospital shutters compassionate care center

East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry hopes to eventually reopen its shuttered outpatient surgery center, The Intelligencer reports.

Here are five things to know.

1. The Compassionate Care Center for Surgical Excellence in Bridgeport, Ohio, opened in 2013 but recently closed. EORH took over the center more than a year ago.

2. The center’s closure has been attributed, in part, to low numbers of surgical procedures, according to the report.

3. After the closure, the center’s outpatient services, such as ophthalmology, orthopedics and gastrointestinal scopes, were moved to EORH, Bernie Albertini, vice president of physician services at the hospital, told The Intelligencer.

4. However, the hospital contends the closure is not permanent. “We hope to reopen it. We’re working through the whole Alecto issue as well,” Mr. Albertini said in the report. “Our goal is maybe once the Alecto deal goes through, maybe we can get some more physicians and reopen it.”

5. Earlier this month, Irvine, Calif.-based Alecto Healthcare Services reached a joint agreement with Wheeling, W.Va.-based Ohio Valley Health Services and Education to purchase Ohio Valley Medical Center, also in Wheeling, and EORH.
