Apex-based North Carolina Children’s has secured a $100 million grant from Charlotte-based The Duke Endowment to support development of the Carolinas’ first independent, freestanding children’s health system.

Five things to know:

1. The grant is the largest philanthropic commitment to date for NC Children’s and follows a $424.5 million investment from the North Carolina General Assembly, according to an Oct. 20 health system news release.

2. Established in 2025 by Durham, N.C.-based Duke Health and Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health, NC Children’s plans to build a pediatric healthcare campus in Apex, N.C.

3. The campus will include an approximately 500-bed acute-care children’s hospital, a 70-bed pediatric behavioral health hospital, an ambulatory surgery center and facilities for research and medical education.

4. The system aims to expand access to specialized pediatric care, including treatment for childhood cancer and rare genetic disorders. It also plans to connect patients with specialists through clinics, telehealth and partnerships with community hospitals and providers.

5. Groundbreaking on the Apex campus is planned for 2027, with the health system expected to open in the early 2030s. Pediatric programs from Duke Children’s and UNC Children’s will move to the campus when it opens.
