Durham, N.C.-based Duke University Health System and Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health are seeking state approval to develop a new $225 million hospital in Mebane.
However, the planned facility is also in direct competition with Greensboro, N.C.-based Cone Health’s plan to build a $275 million facility in the same area. Both plans are expected to be viewed by state regulators as “competing proposals,” according to a report in Business North Carolina.
In a statement shared with Becker’s, a Novant spokesperson said the certificate-of-need application is “part of our commitment to building a healthier future” and is “the latest example of Novant Health’s commitment to transforming the health and wellness of communities throughout the Carolinas.”
Duke also shared a statement.
“Providing Alamance County residents with local, essential acute care services on Duke Health-owned property in Mebane, the plans for this facility address specific healthcare needs identified in the 2025 state medical facilities plan,” the statement said. “It will build upon Duke Health’s decade of multi-specialty care in the community at Kernodle Clinic.”
Novant and Duke both also noted that their new hospital would expand access to acute care services and clinical expertise in the region.
Their application comes roughly a month after Duke and Novant shared plans to partner and build new healthcare campuses across North Carolina. The systems did not share additional details about the number or types of sites they were planning at the time.
The Duke-Novant and Cone Health applications are pending state approval. Both applications are for a hospital with no more than 46 acute care beds.
