County OKs land acquisition for Harris Health expansion

Bellaire, Texas-based Harris Health System will move forward with a hospital expansion after county officials approved the use of eminent domain to acquire approximately 8.9 acres of city-owned land for the project.

Here are six things to know:

1. Harris County commissioners unanimously approved the measure March 19, allowing Harris Health to begin planning and constructing for the expansion of Ben Taub Hospital in Houston, according to a March 19 health system news release.

2. The hospital has faced sustained increases in patient volume and acuity, and it is one of only two adult level 1 trauma centers in Harris County and has frequently operated beyond capacity, the release said.

3. The vote ends a monthslong debate over the proposed land acquisition at Hermann Park, Houston Public Media reported March 19. Opponents said the expansion could set a precedent for future loss of park land. However, Hermann Park Conservancy President Cara Lambright, who previously voiced opposition, said the organization concluded there is no other feasible option for the expansion, the NPR affiliate reported.

4. The land sits adjacent to the existing hospital campus and is expected to support expanded inpatient capacity, increased trauma and emergency care volume, and modernization of aging infrastructure, Harris Health said.

5. The system will begin detailed planning, design and community engagement. Construction timelines and project scope to be determined as planning progresses.

6. The expansion is funded through a $2.5 billion bond approved by Harris County voters in 2023.
